| It's offical!
On Saturday July 8, 2000 the new sign went up at the intersection of
Highway 12 and Cap Endres Road.
In 1997 the Bemidji Pioneer newspaper announced that the road off
Highway 12 that winds its way to Camp was to be named Cap Endres Road in honor of our
founder, Cap Endres. The news release was correct, but some unforseen roadblocks
were encountered and it was finally on September 3, 1998 that the name became official.
Otto and Helen Endres, "Cap and Mom", together founded Camp
Chippewa in 1935 on the north shore of Cass Lake. At that time there
was virtually nothing else on that part of the lake. There was a
trail that was used by the Chippewa Indians, and Cap was the man who built
the road and cleared the pathway that brought in the electric line.
Both Cap and Mom have been honored by the American Camping Association as Pioneers
of Camping. We wish the local authorities had found some way to
acknowledge the contributions of Mom, as she was equally instrumental in the development
of Camp Chippewa.
