The year 2002 will find a new hand on the helm at Camp Chippewa as Michael
Thompson accepts the baton from J.P. A new Director, yes, but the same
direction. Mike began his camping adventures at Cass Lake in 1982 and in the
ensuing years he has been; camper, CIT, counselor, unit head, and for the past
three summers J.P.'s Assistant Director.
A graduate of Kansas University, Mike's Chippewa education holds a solid
background in the program that has challenged campers for years. He is a
graduate of the American Camping Association's Camp Director Institute. He is an
accomplished sailor, top flight tennis player, archer, and the backbone of the
Chippewa fencing program. In recent years his canoeing ranges from trips down
the Mississippi to Lake Winnie to the challenge of the Bloodvein and Seal Rivers
and the salt water of Hudson Bay. Mike has paddled them all and knows the depth
and focus of our canoeing adventures.
Now which pasture is J.P. to graze in? It's the same one he has tended since
1944. He looks forward to leaving the desk stuff to Mike so he and Cammy can
spend more time on the Cass Court, instructing beginners and advanced players in
the delights of tennis. Stories from Paul Bunyan and Jack London will still be
read. The Most Dangerous Game will precede every Counselor Hunt and Cass'l cabin
will be open for evenings of pop and popcorn on a regular basis. So as things
change, they remain the same. Mike brings a solid Chippewa background and the
ability and enthusiasm to guide us in this 21st century.
Congratulations Mike, and good luck!
