September 11th!  Now What?                [return to News]

While the horror of that dreadful day is still fresh in our minds, we pause, wondering if America will ever be the same. We have lost a measure of naiveté, and with it, a feeling of security. That we remain strong and united in defending our freedom is certain, but at the same time we hesitate and are uncertain as to how best to cope with the dangers that lie ahead.

After the initial shock, Cammy and I wondered how it would affect Camp Chippewa and the boys and men who are a part of it. Our conclusion: the experiences that lie ahead for those who are a part of our summer family will be even more important in helping them shape the kind of life that will aid them in meeting the challenges that are now posed to our country. The ability to live in community, listen and share ideas, lead and follow a leader, communicate, solve problems, love and respect others, and love and respect this country is ever present. The challenges and adventures that are found at Camp Chippewa, and the lessons that are learned, build character and backbone that will give strength as tough problems present themselves in later life.

As Camp Chippewa enters its 67th year I am confident that the role it will play in the growth and development of our campers will be as great as it has been in the past. Given strong leadership, mature and caring counselors, and the faith in God and mankind, we will succeed.
